Columbia University’s interim president, Katrina Armstrong, has resigned, the college announced, amidst mounting pressure from the government and human rights activists regarding its handling of the Gaza protests last year. Armstrong will be returning to lead the university’s Irving Medical Center, as stated by Columbia University in a recent announcement. The reason for this change was not disclosed. Claire Shipman, Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees, has been appointed Acting President until the completion of the presidential search process.
The Trump administration withdrew $400 million in federal funding from Columbia University, citing inadequate efforts to address antisemitism and ensure student safety during the protests related to Israel’s actions in Gaza. Columbia eventually agreed to implement changes requested by the administration, which sparked criticism from advocates of free speech.
In her final statement, Armstrong emphasized her commitment to advancing the university’s mission, maintaining academic activities without interruption, and creating a safe and inclusive environment for all members of the campus community. Columbia was a focal point of the Gaza protests in the summer of 2024, which spread across the United States. Protesters called for an end to Israel’s military operations in Gaza following attacks by Hamas and urged universities to divest from companies with connections to Israel.
